I’m in a fishy mood at the moment so this is my Something Fishy Beanie Hat knitting pattern. Its knitted in pure silk so is absolutely divine but you can make it in any dk of your choice. I added some extra fishy sparkle with a bit of Anchor Artiste metallic but that is optional.
The knitting pattern covers 5 sizes so covers anyone with a head circumference between 16-26 inches which covers babies and upwards. I’ve added an extra large size for men with big heads who can now no longer lie about the size of the one that got away.

I’ve been having fun designing hat knitting patterns for babies. I have chosen some exquisite yarns to use ( including pure silk) yet due to the small amount needed most cost only a few pounds to make.
All of the hat knitting patterns cover 3 sizes S,M & L so can be made for any baby with a head circumference between 14 – 20 inches. Due to popular demand I am now including an XS size for premature babies (12-14 inch) and am in the process of updating the older patterns to include this XS size. HENRY”S HEN “THYME” – madhenknits knitting pattern no 1

When my nephew Henry was just seven years old he asked Santa for some laying hens for Christmas. According to Henry, Santa in New Lanark was so shocked he almost fell off his sleigh. Henry had to wait a few months but he finally got his Christmas present and he called his three hens Rosemary, Sage and Thyme. Henrys hens started laying eggs immediately and Thyme became Henry’s favourite because she laid beautiful brown eggs with lovely orange yolks. Henry became very popular at school because he often gave his teachers and friends a box of his wonderful eggs.

Everything was fine for the first few years and the hens were completely free range and slept in a coup at night. But then the fox came! First he got Mr Pumper the rabbit and then Sage and then Rosemary. Henry was devastated and got his dad to immediately build a huge electric fenced enclosure to keep Thyme safe. A neighbour kindly gave Henry some brown hens to keep Thyme company and so keep her laying those fantastic eggs. Sadly Thyme died peacefully this summer of old age and Henry asked me to knit him a lifesize replica so that he would never forget her.

So I did and as a surprise I also made him a matching beanie hat to wear when collecting the eggs before school each morning.
Designing the hen proved to be more difficult than I imagined, I knew they had red bits but was not sure where exactly.
I went to my local butcher and asked to buy a chicken head. The butcher said “You won’t get much meat off of that love” and I said “That’s O.K. I’m not going to eat it I’m going to knit it!” The head turned out quite good so I then went on to design the body.

Henry had helped by sending me a very detailed diagram with all the relevant measurements, he also sent me some photos of his hens but I had trouble with working out the shape due to all the feathers.
I decided there was only one way to go so I went out and bought a chicken for our tea. Before roasting it I took all the elastic rings off and turned it upside down and positioned it in a standing position and this really helped with the design. Just don’t tell my husband what I did to it before serving him his dinner!
I designed the hen to stand free yet retain its delicate feet.
I designed a feather but realised single feathers would take forever so I made a row of feathers in ascending size and that worked very well with the tail.

CUSHION KNITTING PATTERNS – MADCUSHIONKNITS

My eldest cat Fluffy is 17 years old and spends more and more of her time sleeping.She loves to curl up in the cat baskets and I thought I should increase her comfort by making her a lovely cushion. I decided to make her a pure silk cushion and called it Luxury Fish Supper because it reminds me of what she leaves whenever I poach a fish for her tea. She meticulously eats all the lovely fish flesh but always leaves the head and tail so that the remains end up looking like something from a Tom & Jerry cartoon!
The Luxury Fish Supper Cushion measures 60 cm long by 30 cm wide so will fit into most cat baskets. I particularly like putting it in the small basket so that the tail hangs over the side.

I have used Debbie Bliss Pure Silk as I love the luxurious sheen and have added some Anchor Metallic Artiste to the head and tail to give extra fishy sparkle.I have designed the cushion with an opening at the back so that the cushion can be washed and dried flat and the stuffing can be removed and replaced or washed.
The pattern involves intarsia work (thats picture knitting) but do not be afraid because I have designed a special chart which clearly shows every stitch by colour and also shows all increases and decreases. To help get you started the pattern includes general notes and tips about intarsia techniques and as well as the chart I have also given idiot proof row by row instructions for the first part of the chart. Even if you have never tried intarsia work before the pattern provides fully detailed instructions to make you an expert.
Ever since I finished it Fluffy has slept on it every day and has had many fishy sweet dreams on it.

Don’t worry if you haven’t got a cat it even looks good on the sofa so you can knit one for yourself.
